Birth: 20 January 1893 Cawdor, NSW, AustraliaDeath: 29 March 1918 (age 25) Messines, Belgium, Killed in Action Cemetery or Memorial: Messines Ridge British Cemetery, Belgium Father: William John SMART (7 January 1865 - 16 July 1937) Mother: Harriet MARTIN (8 August 1871 - 30 October 1966) Frederick's occupation was Agriculturist when he enlisted February 1915 at Ryde and served in the 19th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Melbourne on the 'Ceramic' 25 June 1915 and arrived at Gallipoli 16 August 1915. He spent several weeks ill in hospital in Egypt with jaundice and gastric cattarrh contracted in the field at Gallipoli. He had 9 months service in Egypt before proceeding to France arriving via England in November 1916. Information provided by his mother states he transferred to the machine gun section in December 1916 with which he identified himself as one of the most efficient and finest Lewis gunners in the Battalion. In his will Frederick left "two pounds ten shillings to Miss Dorothy Dickman of 6 Richard Ave. Moore Park, Sydney to be spent on a mourning ring , or any other article she may wish to purchase in memory of me." The remainder of his estate he left to his mother and in the event of her death to his father. Lance Corporal Frederick Stanley Martin SMART was killed in action at Messines, Belgium on 29 March 1918 age 25. |
